In the summer of 2015 on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, the life of 17-year-old Dominique Williams was cut short in a fatal shooting that stemmed from a dispute among teenagers. Williams, a male, was a rising high school senior, known for his involvement in his church as a drummer and as a player on the Groves High School football team. The events that tragically culminated in his death began to unfold over a few days in July.
The conflict reportedly started when Williams was
accused of stealing a small amount of marijuana from 15-year-old John Ira Duncan III. This led to a fistfight between the two teenagers the day before the shooting, a confrontation that was recorded and shared on social media, leading to Duncan being ridiculed. In the hours leading up to the fatal encounter, Duncan allegedly made threats about retaliating with a gun, though some who heard the threats did not take them seriously. Friends of Williams even attempted to warn him that Duncan was looking for him and was armed.
On the evening of July 19, 2015, Dominique Williams was with friends near the fountain at Coligny Beach Park, a popular and typically peaceful area. It was there that Duncan approached him and shot him in the head at close range. The shooting, which occurred around 8:15 p.m., sent shockwaves through the community, which is unaccustomed to such violent crime. Emergency services arrived to find Williams deceased at the scene.
Two days after the shooting, John Ira Duncan III's parents turned him in to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office. He was subsequently charged with murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime. Due to the serious nature of the offense, a Family Court judge ruled that Duncan, despite being a juvenile at the time of the crime, would be tried as an adult. During the trial, Duncan claimed self-defense, but the prosecution presented evidence of premeditation, including witness testimony about his threats to kill Williams. After a trial, the jury took a remarkably short time to find him guilty of murder. Ultimately, John Ira Duncan III was sentenced to 37 years in prison for the murder of Dominique Williams.
