In the early morning hours of September 28, 2024, the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a shooting at Fiddlers Cove on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. Upon their arrival at approximately 2:24 a.m., deputies discovered 25-year-old Cory Devon McKie Jr. of Bluffton, who had sustained a fatal gunshot wound.
An investigation into the shooting was immediately launched by the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office, with assistance from the South Carolina Law Enforcement
Division. Their investigation swiftly led to the identification of a suspect, 25-year-old Charles Quincy Barron, also a resident of Bluffton. Barron was taken into custody on the same day as the shooting.
Following his arrest, Charles Quincy Barron was charged with murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. He was subsequently booked into the Beaufort County Detention Center to await legal proceedings. Authorities have encouraged anyone with additional information regarding the incident to come forward and contact Corporal Ray at the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.
Cory Devon McKie Jr. was remembered as a devoted husband and a loving father to his daughter and son. A 2017 graduate of Bluffton High School, he was a talented football player, earning recognition as a regional player of the year in 2016 for his skills as a cornerback, safety, and wide receiver. McKie also honorably served his country in the United States Army at Fort Campbell. Funeral services were held for him on October 5, 2024, in Columbia, South Carolina.
