In the spring of 2017, on a day that began like any other in the peaceful coastal community of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, the life of 20-year-old Quincy King was tragically cut short. On the evening of April 2nd, a gathering of friends at a home on Muddy Creek Road turned into a scene of unimaginable violence, forever altering the lives of all who were present.
King, a young Black man, was visiting the residence where events would take a dark and fatal turn.
The perpetrator was 35-year-old Malcolm Tiaheem Melton, a visitor from Wilmington, North Carolina, who was staying at the house with his girlfriend. In the days leading up to the incident, Melton had consumed large quantities of illegal drugs, including Ecstasy, and had not slept for several days. His drug use fueled a growing paranoia, leading him to believe that the other occupants of the home were conspiring to harm him. Despite pleas from a resident to cease his drug consumption and get some rest, Melton's delusions intensified.
In a state of drug-induced delirium, Melton armed himself and hid behind a refrigerator in the kitchen. As Quincy King walked through a doorway into the kitchen, Melton opened fire, fatally wounding him. Shortly thereafter, another man, 25-year-old Marcol McNair, entered the kitchen and was also shot and killed by Melton. In the aftermath of the shootings, Melton fled the scene, disappearing into the surrounding woods.
The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office was alerted, and a K-9 unit was dispatched to track the fleeing suspect. About an hour later, Melton was discovered lying in a wooded area with a gun on top of him and magazines in his pockets. He was taken into custody without further incident. During questioning, Melton admitted to the shootings, claiming he was convinced that King and McNair had planned to rob or kill him. A search of the crime scene uncovered various illegal substances, including cocaine, crack cocaine, fentanyl, and methamphetamine, as well as a handgun used by one of the occupants to fire at Melton in self-defense. Ballistics testing confirmed that the casings found near the victims' bodies were fired from the. 40-caliber Glock that Melton had brought with him from North Carolina.
Malcolm Tiaheem Melton was charged with two counts of murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. His trial faced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the necessity of mental examinations to determine his competency to stand trial. Ultimately, in January 2022, Melton pleaded guilty to two counts of voluntary manslaughter. The court acknowledged that while his actions were the result of irrational behavior brought on by his drug use, it did not absolve him of legal responsibility. He was sentenced to 30 years in prison, bringing a measure of legal closure to the families of Quincy King and Marcol McNair.
