On a Friday night in April 2020, a physical altercation at the Sandalwood Terrace apartments on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, escalated into a fatal shooting that claimed the life of 21-year-old Shamar Anderson. Deputies from the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office responded to reports of shots fired at the apartment complex around 10 p.m. and discovered Anderson on the floor of an apartment with gunshot wounds.
Emergency medical services transported Anderson to Hilton Head Hospital,
but he was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival. The Beaufort County Coroner's Office was slated to perform a forensic autopsy to officially determine the cause of death. In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, investigators interviewed witnesses and processed the scene for forensic evidence.
During the incident, a second man was also wounded. Callers had reported seeing a black sedan speeding away from the apartment complex after hearing gunshots. While deputies were responding to the scene, they stopped a black sedan that was heading towards the hospital. The driver, who was not publicly identified, had sustained gunshot wounds in the same altercation and was driving himself for medical treatment. He was subsequently transported by ambulance to the hospital and later transferred to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah for treatment of his injuries, from which he was eventually released.
As of the initial reports, no arrests had been made in connection with the shooting, and the investigation by the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office was ongoing. There have been no subsequent public announcements regarding any arrests or the identification of any suspects in the death of Shamar Anderson.
