On March 31, 2016, tragedy struck in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, claiming the life of 28-year-old Airious Darling. The incident unfolded on a front porch where Darling was performing a simple act of care, returning a one-year-old child to the child's father, Corey Gilbert. Darling had been babysitting the infant and was standing outside the residence when shots rang out.
He was struck by gunfire during the exchange, suffering fatal injuries while the child remained unharmed.
Investigators determined that Darling was an innocent bystander and not the intended target of the violence. The shooter had arrived at the scene with the intent to shoot Corey Gilbert, the man to whom Darling was handing the child. According to statements provided to police, the motive for the attack stemmed from an earlier conflict; Gilbert had reportedly threatened to inform authorities about the shooter's involvement in a prior robbery. This threat allegedly prompted the gunman to seek out Gilbert at his home, resulting in Darling being caught in the line of fire.
Police identified the suspect as Tavious Tipler, who was 20 years old at the time of the legal proceedings. Following the investigation, Tipler was arrested and charged in connection with Darling's death. The case moved through the legal system for nearly two years before reaching a resolution. In January 2018, rather than facing a trial, Tipler entered a guilty plea to the charge of second-degree murder. As part of the plea agreement accepted by the court, prosecutors recommended a prison sentence of twenty-five years for the crime.
