On the evening of September 23, 2022, a violent incident occurred at a residence in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, resulting in the death of Robert Mannie, a 57-year-old male. Officers from the Cape Girardeau Police Department responded to a call regarding a shooting in the 900 block of William Street around 6:00 p.m. Upon arrival, they discovered Mannie had sustained fatal gunshot wounds. Despite the efforts of first responders, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The loss rippled through his community, where he was known as a dedicated forklift operator who took great joy in cooking for his wife and three children.
Law enforcement quickly identified a suspect in the immediate vicinity of the crime scene. Martevion Curry, 22 years old at the time of the incident, was located nearby and taken into custody without a struggle. Following the investigation, the Cape Girardeau County Prosecuting Attorney filed formal charges against Curry, accusing him of second-degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with the fatal shooting.
Legal proceedings commenced shortly after the arrest, with Curry entering a plea of not guilty during his initial court appearance. He was ordered to be held on a $1 million cash-only bond. Jail records indicate that Curry remains in custody at the Cape Girardeau County detention center, facing the murder charges as well as additional counts for sexual misconduct and failure to appear. Family and friends of the victim have publicly mourned his passing, describing him as a larger-than-life figure who was fiercely protective and loving toward those close to him.
