On January 28, 2020, a violent incident unfolded in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, claiming the life of Marc’Anthony Vontrell Jones, a 19-year-old Black male. Officers from the Cape Girardeau Police Department responded to a call regarding a shooting in the 1100 block of South Sprigg Street. Upon arrival at the residence, first responders discovered Jones suffering from gunshot wounds.
He was immediately transported to a local hospital for emergency treatment, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
Following the homicide, the Cape Girardeau/Bollinger County Major Case Squad was activated to lead the investigation. This specialized unit, comprised of investigators from multiple local agencies, worked to gather evidence and interview potential witnesses in the immediate aftermath of the shooting. The squad operated for approximately 96 hours, pursuing leads to determine the circumstances surrounding the death.
Despite the intensive initial effort, the Major Case Squad disbanded on February 1, 2020, without making any immediate arrests. The investigation was subsequently handed back to the Cape Girardeau Police Department’s detective division. Public reports and annual crime summaries from the period indicate that no suspects were formally charged in connection with the killing during the initial investigation, and the case remained open with law enforcement continuing to seek information from the community. Jones was remembered by his family, including his parents and brothers, as a young man who enjoyed electronics and video games, with aspirations of working in the technology sector.
