In the pre-dawn hours of a Monday in Saint Louis, Missouri, the life of 17-year-old Davaun Winters, a male, came to a violent and tragic end. On July 15, 2019, police responded to a call around 3:50 a.m. and found Winters in the Mount Pleasant neighborhood at the intersection of Broadway and Osceola. He was inside a car that had crashed and was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Medical responders pronounced him deceased at the scene.
Further investigation revealed that Winters was not alone in the vehicle. A 16-year-old male was also in the car at the time of the shooting but was not injured. The car itself was later discovered to have been stolen. The circumstances that led to the fatal shooting are still unclear. In a related incident, another car with a 31-year-old woman and a 34-year-old man fled the sound of gunfire and was subsequently involved in an accident. Both occupants were taken to a hospital for treatment.
The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Division has been handling the investigation. In the years following Davaun Winters' death, there has been no public announcement regarding any arrests or the identification of any suspects in connection with his murder. His case was featured in a KSDK 5 On Your Side series titled 'CUT SHORT: Unsolved Killings of St. Louis Children,' which brought renewed attention to the still-unresolved tragedy. Authorities have continued to ask for anyone with information to come forward, but as of now, the case remains unsolved, and a family is left without justice for their teenage son.
