In the spring of 2020, the life of Randy Moore, a 30-year-old Black male, was tragically cut short on the streets of St. Louis, Missouri. On the evening of April 9th, officers responded to a call in the 3700 block of Aldine Avenue to find Moore lying in the street, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
Moore was a father of three young children who, according to his family, had been released from prison just two months prior and was working to rebuild his life.
The investigation into Moore's death led authorities to a suspect, Brandon Campbell, also 30 years old at the time. In December 2020, Campbell was charged with first-degree murder, armed criminal action, and unlawful possession of a firearm in connection with Moore's death. A warrant was issued for his arrest, and he was taken into custody.
However, the path to justice for Randy Moore and his family proved to be fraught with complications and frustration. The case against Brandon Campbell was dismissed in July 2021 after prosecutors from the St. Louis Circuit Attorney's Office failed to appear for multiple court hearings. This decision led to Campbell's release from custody, a development that Moore's family reportedly learned about not from the prosecutor's office, but through media reports.
In the wake of public outcry and the family's expressed outrage, the charges against Campbell were refiled. Despite this, confusion ensued regarding Campbell's whereabouts, with conflicting reports about whether he was back in custody. At one point, law enforcement issued a public plea for assistance in locating him. The handling of the case drew criticism and highlighted broader concerns about the administration of justice in St. Louis. Moore's family, including his sisters, voiced their deep disappointment and feelings of being neglected by the very system they had entrusted to bring them closure.
