In the early morning hours of January 12, 2022, the life of Martin Rybialek, a 42-year-old male, was tragically cut short in the basement of an apartment building in the 2700 block of Dalton Avenue in the Southwest Garden neighborhood of St. Louis, Missouri. Officers responded to a report of shots fired at the residence just before 6:40 a.m. and discovered Rybialek, who had been fatally shot.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the homicide revealed that the residence was being used for the distribution of methamphetamine. The case against the primary suspect, Dontae Mentria, 33, was meticulously built over several months, piecing together crucial evidence from the scene. A witness informed police that three acquaintances had come to the apartment complex on the morning of the shooting and that Mentria was the only person in the basement with Rybialek when the shooting occurred. Following the sound of gunfire, three individuals were seen leaving the complex in two vans.
Initially facing a first-degree murder charge, Dontae Mentria agreed to a plea deal. He pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter, armed criminal action, and unlawful possession of a firearm. On March 25, 2025, Mentria was sentenced to a total of 18 years in prison. The sentence consists of 15 years for voluntary manslaughter, a consecutive three-year term for armed criminal action, and a concurrent seven-year sentence for the firearm charge. At the time of the shooting, Mentria had prior felony convictions that prohibited him from legally possessing a firearm. During the sentencing hearing, Rybialek's ex-wife addressed Mentria, speaking to the profound impact his actions had on their child.
