On May 14, 2018, the life of Clarence Comer, a 31-year-old Black male resident of St. Louis, Missouri, was brought to a violent end in the suburb of Riverview. Comer had traveled to a residence on the 300 block of Scenic Drive with the intention of retrieving personal property from the home of his ex-girlfriend. This routine errand quickly escalated into a deadly confrontation outside the residence, drawing the attention of local law enforcement to the quiet neighborhood.
Upon his
arrival, Comer was met by 22-year-old Dominique Gilliam, who was present at the scene and armed with a semi-automatic weapon. A verbal dispute ensued between the two men regarding the firearm, during which Comer reportedly questioned Gilliam's intentions. The situation deteriorated rapidly when Gilliam discharged the weapon, striking Comer. Following the initial gunfire, Gilliam entered a vehicle driven by Comer's ex-girlfriend and fled the area, allegedly firing additional shots as the car sped away from the scene.
Emergency responders arrived to find Comer suffering from at least one gunshot wound. Despite their presence, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The investigation led police to identify Gilliam as the primary suspect in the homicide. He was subsequently taken into custody and charged with second-degree murder and unlawful use of a weapon. A judge set his bond at $250,000, cash-only, as the legal process began to unfold.
