On September 8, 2015, a 22-year-old Black male named Devion Falls from East St. Louis, Illinois, was killed in the West End neighborhood of St. Louis, Missouri. The incident occurred in the early afternoon when Falls traveled across the river with a group of associates, including his brother Darereon Falls, Kenneth Berry, and Alexis Wilson. The group arrived in the 6000 block of Suburban Avenue with the intention of purchasing firearms.
Upon arrival, Kenneth Berry and Alexis Wilson remained with their vehicle while Devion and Darereon Falls went to meet with the sellers behind a building.
The transaction quickly turned violent when the individuals they met, including 18-year-old Jamel Yates, produced a weapon. As the situation escalated, Yates brandished a firearm and opened fire on the brothers as they attempted to flee toward their car. Devion Falls was struck in the head and torso by the gunfire. Despite being critically injured, he was transported to a local hospital by his companions, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
Law enforcement identified Jamel Yates as a suspect in the shooting. He was subsequently arrested and charged with multiple offenses, including the first-degree murder of Devion Falls, first-degree assault against the three other individuals present, and armed criminal action. The investigation revealed that the meeting had been arranged specifically for the gun sale, a detail that became central to the prosecution's case.

Jamel Yates was acquitted of the murder charge related to the death of Devion Falls.
