On the afternoon of January 17, 2022, Armaun James 'Maundo' Jackson, a 19-year-old Black male from Bridgeton, Missouri, was found deceased in the driver’s seat of a vehicle in St. Louis County. Law enforcement officers responded to a call regarding shots fired at approximately 2:15 p.m. in the 7300 block of Ridgehaven Lane within the Norwood Court apartment complex. Upon arrival, they discovered Jackson inside a car, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds at close range.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation revealed that Jackson had been lured to the location through electronic communication. Authorities discovered text messages exchanged between the victim and a woman named Destinee Reese, as well as a man named Rodney Holt III, just minutes before the shooting. The correspondence arranged for Jackson to meet at the apartment complex where Holt resided. Witness accounts indicated that shortly after Jackson arrived and parked his vehicle, an individual approached the car and fired several rounds, fatally striking him.
Initial police work led to the arrest of a different man, Randle Canaday, who was identified by two witnesses as being the only other person in the immediate vicinity at the time of the gunfire. Canaday was taken into custody hours after the incident and charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action. However, as the investigation deepened, evidence pointed away from him. The charges against Canaday were eventually dropped by the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney's Office after it was determined he was not the perpetrator.
Two years after the homicide, significant developments led to new charges. In January 2024, prosecutors charged 20-year-old Rodney Holt III with first-degree murder and armed criminal action. Police alleged that Holt coordinated the specific details of the meeting and was found in possession of the firearm used to kill Jackson months after the shooting. Destinee Reese, who initiated the text exchange to set up the meeting, faced charges for hindering prosecution. Holt was held on a $500,000 cash-only bond as the legal proceedings commenced. Jackson was laid to rest following services at New Spring Church and interment at New Bethlehem Cemetery.
