Adam Bentdahl, aged 31, tragically lost his life on May 3, 2015, while walking on the Trestle Trail over Little Lake Butte des Morts in Menasha, Wisconsin. Bentdahl was one of the victims in a shocking and unprovoked shooting incident that occurred on the trail. The shooter, identified as Sergio Daniel Valencia del Toro, 27, of Menasha, opened fire on Bentdahl and other individuals on the trail.
Valencia del Toro, who had been dealing with relationship issues and had recently called off his wedding, rode his bicycle to the trail and began shooting at close range without any prior interaction with the victims.
The incident resulted in the deaths of four people, including Bentdahl, and left others injured. Valencia del Toro shot Bentdahl in the head at point-blank range before turning his gun on other victims, including Jonathan Stoffel and his 11-year-old daughter, Olivia Stoffel. Jonathan's wife, Erin Stoffel, was critically injured but survived the attack. Valencia del Toro, who was intoxicated at the time of the shooting, ultimately took his own life after the rampage.
The investigation into the shooting revealed that Valencia del Toro had a history of suicidal and homicidal thoughts dating back to 2010. Toxicology reports indicated that his blood-alcohol level was three times the legal limit for driving at the time of the incident. Despite his troubled past, there was no prior indication that Valencia del Toro would commit such a violent act. The police and FBI found no links to extremist organizations, although Valencia del Toro had religious tattoos and Arabic writings in his home.
The community was deeply affected by the tragedy, and the incident highlighted the unpredictable nature of such violent acts. The bravery of Erin Stoffel, who managed to save her two other children despite being injured, was widely recognized. The case did not lead to any further arrests or litigations, as the perpetrator had already taken his own life.
