On March 28, 2023, at approximately 5:35 p.m., the Ector County Sheriff's Office responded to reports of gunfire in the 10100 block of Westridge Drive in West Odessa, Texas. Upon arrival, deputies discovered 21-year-old Arron Fuentez deceased in a driveway, the victim of multiple gunshot wounds.
Investigations revealed that prior to the shooting, Fuentez had been involved in a physical altercation with a friend.
Observing the fight was 19-year-old Sabastian Jaydan Ocon, who was not directly involved in the altercation. After the fight concluded, Ocon reportedly drew a firearm and discharged several rounds at Fuentez, resulting in his death.
Following the incident, Ocon fled the scene on foot. Witnesses noted that during his escape, he fell, sustaining facial injuries consistent with road rash. Law enforcement officers apprehended Ocon approximately three blocks away from the crime scene. He was subsequently charged with murder and booked into the Ector County Detention Center, with bond set at $750,000.
Further investigation into Ocon's background revealed that in January 2023, he had been placed on two years’ deferred adjudication for prior offenses, including a March 2021 injury to a child charge and a September 2022 evading arrest with a vehicle charge. As part of his probation conditions, Ocon was prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition.
The tragic death of Arron Fuentez underscores the severe consequences of gun violence and raises questions about the enforcement of firearm possession restrictions for individuals with prior legal offenses. As the legal process unfolds, the community remains attentive to the proceedings and the broader implications for public safety.
