On the afternoon of October 2, 2021, violence erupted in a residential neighborhood of Kansas City, Missouri, claiming the lives of three young adults. Police officers were dispatched to the area of 27th Street and Spruce Avenue just before 4:00 p.m. following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, first responders discovered three victims who had sustained gunshot wounds and were unresponsive. Despite the efforts of emergency crews, all three individuals were declared dead at the scene.
Among the deceased was 24-year-old Devon Key, a male resident of the area, who lost his life alongside 24-year-old Kanen Wheaton and 23-year-old Johnnai Owens.
The initial investigation revealed that the victims were situated at a home in eastern Kansas City when a vehicle approached them. Occupants of the vehicle opened fire on the group before fleeing the scene in an unknown direction. Detectives and crime scene investigators spent hours processing the area, canvassing for witnesses, and collecting evidence to piece together the events that led to the triple homicide. For months, authorities worked to identify those responsible for the attack, relying on forensic evidence and electronic data to track the movements of potential suspects.
Significant breakthroughs in the case came with the identification and charging of two suspects. In October 2021, prosecutors charged Lucas Baker with nine counts related to the incident, including three counts of second-degree accessory murder. The investigation continued, leading to further charges the following year. In March 2022, a second suspect, 21-year-old Joshua Bell, was charged with three counts of second-degree accessory murder, unlawful use of a weapon, and four counts of armed criminal action. Court documents indicated that Bell's phone was detected in the area of the suspect vehicle before and after the shooting, and he reportedly admitted to assisting in the theft of ammunition that was later recovered at the crime scene.
