On Friday, August 27, 2021, police in Kansas City, Missouri, were dispatched to a disturbance in the 7900 block of East 112th Street shortly after 2:15 a.m. Upon arrival, officers discovered 41-year-old Kurreem D. Graves slumped over in the driver’s seat of a white Chevrolet Suburban. He was unresponsive and had sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
Emergency medical personnel pronounced the male victim dead at the scene, and the Jackson County Medical Examiner’s Office subsequently ruled the death a homicide.
Witnesses at the scene identified the suspect as 29-year-old Darryl Donegan, also known as 'Ready,' describing him as a friend of the victim. According to reports, the two men had been arguing throughout the night. The conflict reportedly escalated after Donegan claimed that Graves had asked him to kill a female witness present at the residence. When the witness confronted Graves with this information, Graves denied it and called Donegan a liar. Witnesses stated that Donegan became aggressive and displayed a black handgun equipped with an extended magazine. Graves eventually left the premises in his vehicle but returned a short time later, at which point witnesses observed Donegan fire multiple shots at him before walking away.
Law enforcement officers located and arrested Donegan at his nearby residence. During questioning, he reportedly admitted to being at the scene and shooting the victim, telling detectives that he believed numerous people, including Graves, were 'after him' and trying to kill him. Donegan allegedly confessed to firing more than two but fewer than ten rounds and directed police to his backyard, where a police dog recovered the weapon hidden under vegetation. Prosecutors charged Donegan with second-degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with the fatal shooting.
