In the late morning hours of October 19, 2020, a violent encounter in a south Kansas City McDonald's parking lot brought a sudden end to the life of 35-year-old Rickey Arrington. The male victim was discovered inside his blue Toyota Corolla at the restaurant located near 110th Street and Hickman Mills Drive. His vehicle was riddled with bullets, showing at least twelve distinct bullet holes piercing the driver's side.
First responders rushed Arrington to a local hospital, but he ultimately succumbed to his gunshot wounds.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to a suspect. Surveillance video from the parking lot captured the moments leading up to the fatal shooting. The footage showed a man, later identified as 28-year-old Kenny T. Moore of Independence, approaching Arrington's car with a gun in his hand. As Arrington began to reverse his vehicle, Moore allegedly opened fire. After the shooting, he was seen running to a dark-colored Jeep Cherokee, which then sped away from the scene.
Authorities later located the suspected getaway vehicle, which had been wrecked in the vicinity of the 8700 block of Prospect Avenue. Witnesses in that area reported seeing two men running from the crashed Jeep and discarding firearms into a nearby wooded area. When detectives apprehended and interviewed Moore, he denied being present at the McDonald's at the time of the shooting and requested legal counsel. However, investigators noted that the clothing Moore was wearing at the time of his arrest appeared to be the same as that worn by the shooter in the video evidence. Following the investigation, the Jackson County Prosecutor's Office charged Kenny T. Moore with second-degree murder, two counts of armed criminal action, and unlawful use of a weapon.
