Patrolman Alexander R. McKinney of the Kansas City Police Department was tragically shot on January 22, 1903, and succumbed to his injuries two days later on January 24, 1903. The incident occurred in the lobby of the police headquarters when McKinney was confronted by Sylvester Swank, a mentally disturbed individual who had escaped from the St. Joseph Asylum a few days prior.
