In the winter of 2017, the life of 52-year-old Rodney Vernon Thurber, a father of three, was brought to a violent and tragic end inside his second-floor apartment on Tracy Avenue in Kansas City, Missouri. On the evening of November 11th, police were dispatched to the residence following a report of a shooting. Upon arrival, they discovered Mr. Thurber's body, bearing the fatal wounds of multiple gunshots.
The investigation into the homicide soon uncovered a dark sequence of events that
led detectives to two individuals: Patrick R. Powell and his girlfriend, Caitlyn A. Riffle. According to court records and witness testimony, the tragic encounter began when Riffle went to Thurber's apartment, purportedly to retrieve a handgun. Shortly after her arrival, Powell, identifying himself as Riffle's boyfriend, forced his way into the apartment. What followed was a brutal attack, during which Powell taunted Thurber before shooting him repeatedly. Investigators later found that Thurber's last communication was a text message from Riffle, asking him to open the door.
Utilizing a combination of evidence, including witness statements, surveillance footage from the area, and cell phone records, law enforcement officials were able to track down and arrest both Powell and Riffle. The couple was subsequently charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with Rodney Thurber's death.
The legal process brought both individuals to justice for their roles in the crime. In March 2019, Patrick Powell was convicted of first-degree murder and armed criminal action. A witness at his trial recounted how Powell had taunted the victim during the fatal shooting. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, with an additional ten years. Two years later, in April 2021, a Jackson County jury also convicted Caitlyn Riffle of first-degree murder and armed criminal action. The jury recommended a sentence of life without parole plus fifteen years, a sentence that was formally imposed by a judge in June of that same year, bringing a close to the search for justice for Rodney Thurber.
