In the summer of 2021, a life was tragically cut short in a south Kansas City hotel. Fred Brewster, an 18-year-old male, was fatally shot on Sunday, August 8, 2021. The incident occurred before 1 p.m. inside a room at the Extended Stay hotel situated in the 500 block of East 105th Street. When police officers arrived at the scene, they discovered Brewster suffering from gunshot wounds.
Despite any efforts to render aid, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hotel.
At the scene of the shooting, officers encountered Charles Greer-Johnson, a 22-year-old man from Kansas City. Greer-Johnson was subsequently taken into custody. According to reports, he made a spontaneous statement to the police, claiming that he had shot Brewster in self-defense. Investigators found four spent shell casings in Greer-Johnson's pocket, and two firearms were observed on a table within the hotel room. One witness informed the police that the shooting took place while a toddler was nearby.
Following the investigation, the Jackson County Prosecutor's Office filed charges against Charles Greer-Johnson. He was charged with second-degree murder and other related crimes in connection with the death of Fred Brewster Jr. During an interview with detectives, Greer-Johnson alleged that he fired several shots at Brewster after Brewster had pointed a handgun at him. He also stated that he and another individual attempted to provide first aid to Brewster until the police arrived. The case then moved into the judicial system for legal proceedings.
