In the early hours of June 14, 2025, gunfire shattered the quiet outside a gas station near East 35th Street and Prospect Avenue in Kansas City, Missouri. Officers responding just after 1:30 a.m. found multiple victims in the parking lot; among them was Monique K. Smith, 34, a woman who had been gravely wounded. She was rushed to a hospital, where she died shortly afterward, as detectives began piecing together what had unfolded in the brief, violent burst of shots.
