Sheila Faith, a 45-year-old White woman, vanished in 1994 after trying to rebuild a life that had already been stripped down to survival. In Colorado, she was living on disability benefits and caring for her teenage daughter, Debbie, who used a wheelchair because of spina bifida. Friends later described Sheila as lonely and hungry for a promise that sounded like rescue, and when John Edward Robinson entered her orbit—slick, attentive, and offering an easy future—she let herself believe him. ...
