On the evening of Friday, March 2, 2018, Kansas City, Missouri police officers were alerted to a violent incident in the city's nascent spring darkness. Reports of gunfire drew law enforcement to the 5100 block of The Paseo, a prominent boulevard cutting through the heart of the metro area. Upon arrival near 51st Street and The Paseo, investigators discovered a crime scene consistent with a shooting, but the victim was no longer present.
As detectives began to canvas the area, they
received notification from a local hospital that a critically injured male had been transported to the emergency room by a private vehicle. The man, identified as 36-year-old Brandon Dewayne Davis, had sustained severe gunshot wounds. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, the African American man succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the facility.
Authorities linked Davis to the scene on The Paseo, concluding he was the individual targeted in the earlier discharge of firearms. Witnesses in the vicinity reported seeing a vehicle speeding away from the intersection around the time the shots rang out, offering a fleeting clue to the potential perpetrators. In the days following the homicide, police publicly identified Davis but reported that no suspects were in custody. No arrests were immediately made in connection with the slaying, and investigators urged the public to come forward with information regarding the vehicle or individuals involved.
