In the early morning hours of December 23, 2021, a fatal shooting occurred in the Northland neighborhood of Kansas City, Missouri, claiming the life of 37-year-old Jason Harris. Police officers were dispatched to a residence in the 6800 block of Northeast Ridgeway Avenue around 2:45 a.m. following reports of a disturbance. Upon arrival, first responders discovered Harris suffering from gunshot wounds.
He was immediately transported to a local hospital for emergency treatment, but he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
Witnesses at the scene described a verbal altercation involving two men in the front yard of the property prior to the shooting. Following the gunfire, the assailant fled the location before law enforcement arrived. Investigators were able to develop leads that directed them to a person of interest located a few blocks away from the crime scene. This individual was taken into custody for questioning as detectives worked to piece together the events that led to the violent encounter.
The day following the shooting, the Clay County Prosecutor’s Office formally filed charges against 34-year-old Daniel Cranfill in connection with Harris's death. Cranfill was charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action. The authorities identified the incident as the 154th homicide in Kansas City for that year, marking a violent end to 2021 for the community. As of the initial reports, Cranfill remained in custody facing these serious allegations.
