On May 8, 2017, in Kansas City, Missouri, an African American teenager named Timothy Wayne Durden, Jr. became the victim of a violent confrontation that unfolded in a quiet Northland neighborhood. The 18-year-old, who had attended Park Hill High School and was known for his love of sports and joking with his family, had arranged to meet with an acquaintance at a residence in the 8600 block of North Rhode Avenue, near the Zona Rosa shopping district.
The meeting was established through Snapchat, where Durden, using the screen name 'King,' had reportedly offered to purchase two ounces of marijuana for $1,000—a price significantly higher than the street value, which raised suspicions among the sellers that the transaction might be a setup for a robbery.
The seller, 17-year-old Dominic Pineda, was wary of the deal and decided to arm himself and his friends before Durden arrived. Pineda, along with 17-year-old Keith Spencer and 19-year-old Mohamed Abdi, waited inside the home with weapons at the ready. When a red Chevrolet Monte Carlo pulled up to the house, Durden and another man exited the vehicle and entered the residence while others remained in the car. The transaction moved to the kitchen, where Pineda began to weigh the marijuana. According to court records and later testimony, the situation escalated rapidly when Durden allegedly produced a handgun and pointed it at one of the men in the house, seemingly confirming Pineda's fears of a 'drug rip.'
In response to the drawn weapon, Pineda fired his own gun five times, striking Durden. Chaos ensued as shots rang out; Spencer also discharged a rifle, though he later claimed he had only fired into a wall. Durden managed to flee the kitchen but collapsed in the backyard near the base of an outdoor deck, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. His associate ran back to the waiting vehicle, which then fled the scene. Police arrived to find Durden critically injured, and he was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Following the investigation, authorities arrested Pineda, Spencer, and Abdi, charging them in connection with the homicide. The legal proceedings revealed that the deadly encounter was fueled by the high-stakes atmosphere of the illicit transaction. In November 2018, a jury found Dominic Pineda guilty of second-degree murder, armed criminal action, and attempted distribution of a controlled substance, leading to a ten-year prison sentence. His co-defendants, Keith Spencer and Mohamed Abdi, both pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and armed criminal action. In 2019, they were each sentenced to nine years in prison for their roles in the events that ended Timothy Durden's life.
