On the evening of March 9, 2020, a violent disturbance shattered the quiet of a residential neighborhood in the Northeast area of Kansas City, Missouri. At approximately 8:45 p.m., officers from the Kansas City Police Department were dispatched to the 400 block of Spruce Avenue, located just north of Independence Avenue, following reports of gunfire.
Residents in the vicinity had called 911 after hearing the sound of shots fired and subsequently discovering a person lying unresponsive in the front yard of a home.
Upon arriving at the scene, first responders found a male victim suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. The injured man was immediately transported by emergency medical services to a local hospital for urgent treatment. Despite the life-saving efforts of medical personnel, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival. Authorities identified the victim as 53-year-old Michael Edward Burton.
Homicide detectives processed the scene on Spruce Avenue that night, canvassing the neighborhood for potential witnesses and seeking surveillance footage from nearby homes that might have captured the events leading up to the shooting.
