In the early morning hours of May 2, 2020, violence shattered the peace in the 2300 block of Van Brunt Boulevard in Kansas City, Missouri, claiming the life of 24-year-old Terence Rodgers. Officers from the Kansas City Police Department were dispatched to the scene following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered Rodgers outside a residence, suffering from a gunshot wound.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but tragically, his injuries proved fatal.
Inside the home, the scene was even more grim, with two other victims discovered. One adult male was found in critical condition, while a teenage male was in stable condition. The incident that led to Rodgers' death also claimed the life of another man, Frederick Tolbert. Investigators learned that the shooting stemmed from a heated argument over money and pills that had occurred about an hour prior to the fatal shots being fired.
The investigation into the double homicide led police to identify 31-year-old Raymond Cage as the suspected shooter. Surveillance footage and witness testimony were crucial in piecing together the events of that tragic morning and pointing to Cage as the perpetrator. Believed to have fled the city after the shooting, Cage was later apprehended in St. Louis by U.S. Marshals at a relative's house. Following his arrest, Cage was charged with two counts of second-degree murder, two counts of first-degree assault, and four counts of armed criminal action. During questioning, he denied any involvement in the shooting or any knowledge of the victims.
