On Christmas Eve of 2017, a tragic shooting in Kansas City, Missouri, claimed the life of 27-year-old Abdi Sanweyne. The incident occurred in the early evening, shortly after 6 p.m., on the 300 block of Garfield Avenue. Sanweyne was discovered on a staircase within a residence, having sustained a gunshot wound. Emergency services were dispatched to the scene, and he was quickly transported to a nearby hospital for medical attention.
Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Abdi Sanweyne succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, law enforcement initiated a search for the person responsible. A suspect was spotted near the intersection of Independence Boulevard and Garfield Avenue, not far from the scene of the crime. An alert witness played a crucial role by following the suspect, which led to a prompt arrest by the Kansas City police. The individual taken into custody was identified as Charles V. Carter. During the investigation, police discovered a handgun concealed in a dumpster where Carter had attempted to hide.
The subsequent police investigation uncovered compelling evidence linking Carter to the shooting. Ballistic analysis conducted by the Kansas City Police Department's crime laboratory confirmed that the shell casing found near Abdi Sanweyne's body was fired from the handgun recovered from the dumpster where Carter was apprehended. Following the investigation, Charles V. Carter was charged in connection with the death of Abdi Sanweyne. In October 2019, a jury found Carter, then 23, guilty of second-degree murder and armed criminal action for his role in the fatal Christmas Eve shooting.
