On September 8, 2015, a violent tragedy unfolded in a residence located on the 5900 block of East 84th Street in Kansas City, Missouri. Inside the home, three individuals were fatally shot, including a 1-year-old male named Joseph Fletcher. The other victims were identified as his mother, 17-year-old Bianca Fletcher, and her boyfriend, 18-year-old Shannon Rollins Jr. The incident began as a domestic dispute between Bianca and her ex-boyfriend, Joseph L.
Nelson, who was also the father of the infant. Witnesses reported that an argument escalated when Bianca threw a diaper box at Nelson, striking him. Enraged by the action, Nelson drew a firearm and shot Bianca, killing her.
After the initial shooting, Nelson turned his weapon on the remaining witnesses in the room to prevent them from testifying against him. He shot and killed Shannon Rollins Jr. before turning the gun on his own son, Joseph. Nelson later reportedly told associates that he killed the crying infant because he feared the noise would alert neighbors to the crime. Following the murders, Nelson attempted to cover his tracks by collecting shell casings from the scene, washing his hands with bleach, and disposing of the murder weapon. He also stole personal items from the victims before fleeing the premises.
Law enforcement officers responded to the scene and launched an investigation, eventually identifying Nelson as the primary suspect. He was arrested and initially charged with three counts of first-degree murder, armed criminal action, and burglary. During the investigation, it was revealed that Nelson had confessed the killings to acquaintances, stating he 'did something bad' and that 'other things had to be done' after the first shot. In a complication to the legal proceedings, Nelson married a key witness, Shellana Victoria Davis, in December 2015 while he was incarcerated. Prosecutors alleged this union was a strategic maneuver to invoke spousal privilege and prevent her from testifying about the events she witnessed at the scene. Davis herself was subsequently charged with tampering with evidence and burglary.
As the case moved through the justice system, Nelson eventually reached a plea agreement with prosecutors rather than facing a trial. In January 2019, he pleaded guilty to three counts of second-degree murder, armed criminal action, and tampering with a witness. The plea deal resulted in a sentence of 30 years for the murders and an additional three years for the witness tampering charge, totaling a 33-year prison term. Family members of the victims, including Bianca’s father, expressed their grief and relief that justice was served, remembering the victims as precious lives cut short by senseless violence.
