On an evening in late April, the fluorescent lights of Liquor Xpress at the corner of East 9th Street and Prospect Avenue in Kansas City, Missouri, cast a stark glow on a scene that would soon turn fatal. Inside, an 18-year-old African American male named Donovan Booker was involved in a confrontation that would end his life on April 28, 2025. The young man, born on August 19, 2006, found himself in a struggle with another man near the store's counter.
According to police reports, the
altercation began when Booker allegedly tried to take a 9mm handgun from the pocket of a man who was in the store with his girlfriend. As the two men grappled for control of the weapon, Booker reportedly called out to his 18-year-old companion, Jeremiah Williamson, urging him to 'hurry up and shoot him.' In response, Williamson allegedly drew a firearm from his own waistband. The man struggling with Booker managed to regain control of his gun and fired, striking Booker, who then collapsed just outside the entrance of the store.
The shooter immediately placed Williamson's weapon on the counter and dialed 911, asserting that he had acted in self-defense to protect himself and his girlfriend. When emergency services arrived, they found Booker with critical injuries and transported him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police arriving at the scene found signs of a disturbance, recovering two firearms, five shell casings, and 33 live rounds near the front door.
In the aftermath, law enforcement detained multiple individuals for questioning. Based on surveillance footage and witness statements, authorities arrested Jeremiah Williamson. The Jackson County prosecutor's office charged him with second-degree murder, first-degree attempted robbery, and armed criminal action. The murder charge falls under Missouri's felony murder rule, which allows for a participant in a felony to be held accountable if a death occurs during the commission of that crime. If convicted, Williamson could face a prison sentence of 10 to 30 years.
