Authorities determined that the violence had erupted following a verbal argument at the home, which escalated until a firearm was discharged, striking Roberts.

Despite the efforts of medical staff over the course of the following week, his condition deteriorated, and he succumbed to his wounds on March 26, 2023, nine days after the initial incident. His death was subsequently recorded as a homicide, marking the 35th such killing in the city for that year according to local tracking data.
Law enforcement officials took a suspect into custody at the scene immediately following the shooting. While the investigation was transferred to the Kansas City Police Department's homicide unit after Roberts died, detectives did not publicly release the name of the individual arrested or detailed specific charges at the time of the initial reports.
