Darrell Allen, a 25-year-old man, was fatally shot on the evening of May 16, 2018, in a targeted attack outside a health club in south Kansas City. Originally from Kansas City, Allen had been residing in Texas and was in his hometown visiting family at the time of his death.
On that Wednesday night, at approximately 9:45 p.m., Allen was leaving the Genesis Health Club at the Ward Parkway shopping center when a man with a white T-shirt covering his head began shooting at him.
Allen attempted to run, but the assailant chased him for about 100 yards through the parking lot, continuing to fire what witnesses estimated to be between 20 and 30 shots. Allen was struck by the gunfire and collapsed on a sidewalk, where he was later found by police and pronounced dead.
The brazen nature of the shooting, which left a trail of shell casings and sent bystanders running for cover, led investigators to believe it was not a random act of violence. The suspect, described as a Black male, fled the scene in a dark-colored vehicle immediately following the shooting.
Despite the presence of numerous witnesses and surveillance footage from the shopping center, the gunman has not been apprehended, and no arrests have been made in the case. The investigation into Darrell Allen's murder remains ongoing as his family continues to seek justice.
