Treshaun Denzel Wright, a 21-year-old Black man known affectionately as Tre, was a cherished son, brother, and community member in his native Kansas City, Missouri. Born on October 22, 2002, he was a proud graduate of Center High School. From a young age, Treshaun was an active member of Faith Mission Church, where he served on the usher and hostess boards and worked with the youth ministry.
His family, including his mother, father, and numerous siblings, remembered his vibrant spirit and dedication.
In the early morning hours of August 25, 2024, Treshaun’s life was cut short. Around 1:47 a.m., Kansas City police officers responded to reports of gunshots near the 8200 block of Kenwood Avenue. While canvassing the area, they discovered Treshaun in the driver's seat of his Honda Civic on the 8200 block of Holmes Road. The car was still running, but Treshaun was suffering from a gunshot wound. Emergency medical crews pronounced him dead at the scene.
The subsequent investigation pieced together the moments before the shooting. A witness told detectives that she had been at a party with Treshaun and that he had driven her home. While they were in his car, her ex-boyfriend, La’Relle D. Dennis, suddenly drove up in a white SUV. Surveillance footage from the residence reportedly captured Dennis ramming his vehicle into the back of the Honda. The video then recorded the sound of three gunshots, followed by the witness running into the house screaming. Dennis was seen getting back into his SUV and speeding away.
In February 2025, the Jackson County prosecutor charged La'Relle D. Dennis, a 22-year-old from Lee’s Summit, with second-degree murder, unlawful use of a weapon, and two counts of armed criminal action. A warrant was issued for his arrest, and authorities sought the public's help in locating him.
Dennis was later taken into custody and convicted of voluntary manslaughter and armed criminal action for the killing of Treshaun Wright. In August 2026, a judge sentenced him to a total of 17 years in prison. The sentence consisted of 14 years for voluntary manslaughter and a consecutive three-year term for armed criminal action.
