In the late morning hours of September 2, 2023, a dispute in the Indian Mound neighborhood of Kansas City, Missouri, turned deadly, claiming the life of 28-year-old Leroy M. Purkett. Officers responded to reports of a shooting in the 300 block of Drury Avenue just after 10:30 a.m. and found Purkett lying wounded in the street. Emergency services rushed him to a nearby hospital, but his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead a short time later.
Homicide detectives who took over the investigation believe the shooting was the culmination of an argument that had taken place in the street. At the time, police had not taken anyone into custody and appealed to the public for any information that could lead to a suspect.
Leroy, known to his family as 'L.J.,' had moved to Kansas City from North Carolina about three years prior with his girlfriend. His family, who still resided in North Carolina, was thrown into a state of disbelief upon receiving the news of his violent death. Compounding their grief were the conflicting accounts of what led to the fatal encounter. According to Purkett's brother, the girlfriend had offered differing stories. One version of events suggested a dispute with a neighbor who had accused the couple of stealing a dog they had found. She claimed that after they returned the animal, the neighbor threatened them, and later returned to shoot Purkett in the back of the head. The family remains uncertain about the exact circumstances that led to his death.
The family's pain was further exacerbated by the logistical and financial challenge of bringing Leroy's body back to North Carolina for a proper burial. They started a GoFundMe to help cover the significant costs of transportation and funeral services. His mother, who had endured the previous losses of her own mother to violence and a young son to a house fire, was now faced with the trauma of losing another child to gun violence. As of late 2023, the investigation into Leroy Purkett's death was ongoing, but no arrests had been announced, and no suspects had been publicly identified. His family continues to hope for justice and answers in the tragic loss of their loved one.
