On the evening of March 10, 2014, police were called to a residence in the East Bottoms neighborhood of Kansas City, Missouri, following reports of gunfire. Inside the home located at 823 N. Kansas Ave., they discovered the body of 75-year-old Clite Robert Weibel. He had been fatally shot multiple times while sitting in a chair. The subsequent investigation into the death of the elderly man would soon reveal a story of a robbery gone tragically wrong, culminating in the arrests of five individuals.
Investigators utilized surveillance footage from Weibel's home, which captured images of the five suspects in the vicinity at the time of the murder. This crucial evidence, combined with witness statements, allowed law enforcement to piece together the events of that fatal night. The investigation led to the identification and subsequent charging of four residents of Kansas City, Kansas: Kelon A. Stallings, 28; Terrance Brown; Tionna M. Vanross; and Wayne Fielder. A fifth suspect, 26-year-old Casey A. Ellis of Kansas City, Missouri, was also later charged.
The five individuals were accused of planning and participating in a robbery at Weibel's home. According to court records, the group went to the residence with the intent to steal, a plan that ultimately escalated to murder. Casey A. Ellis admitted to police that he had gone to the victim's home and fled with the others after shots were fired. All five suspects faced charges including second-degree murder, armed criminal action, and theft or stealing a controlled substance. Clite Weibel was survived by his two daughters, eight grandchildren, and a brother. In accordance with his wishes, he was cremated.
