In the early hours of a Friday morning in Kansas City, Missouri, a dispute over a mere five dollars for a small amount of marijuana tragically escalated, leading to the death of 51-year-old Charles Cecil. Recently evicted from their home, Cecil and his 53-year-old wife were experiencing homelessness and had set up a temporary shelter on the steps of the closed Scarritt Elementary School in the city's Northeast neighborhood.
It was there that an argument erupted with a group of individuals over the price of marijuana Cecil was selling.
According to Cecil's wife, who was lying under a tarp nearby, she heard her husband defiantly ask, 'What are you going to do, shoot me?' Moments later, the sound of multiple gunshots pierced the pre-dawn quiet, and the individuals her husband had been talking to fled the scene. When police arrived, they found Charles Cecil deceased, still holding a kitchen knife. His wife had been shot in the arm and had shrapnel in her face but survived the attack. Investigators recovered ten rifle shell casings from the area.
Later that same day, a significant break in the case occurred when a 21-year-old man, who was present during the shooting, approached school resource officers at a nearby high school and asked to be taken to police headquarters. He provided information to detectives that led to the identification of a suspect. Subsequently, police arrested 17-year-old Joshua Reese in connection with the homicide. Reese was charged with second-degree murder and armed criminal action. Another 18-year-old man, a close friend of Reese's who was also present during the incident, was arrested but told detectives he had walked away from the argument before the shots were fired and did not see who pulled the trigger.
