In the early hours of Easter Sunday, April 12, 2020, the life of 33-year-old Daniel L. Washington was tragically cut short in a violent encounter in Kansas City, Missouri. A Black man known affectionately as 'Mont,' Washington was a devoted father to five children and remembered by loved ones for his warm, family-oriented nature and his passion for cars and grilling.
That morning, Washington was a passenger in a vehicle with three other people, including his ex-girlfriend with whom he
shared children and maintained a close, platonic friendship. The group had been driving around and eventually parked in the 4000 block of Agnes Avenue. There, they were approached by Ivan D. Mock, the ex-girlfriend's current partner. Fueled by suspicion and jealousy over her continued friendship with Washington, Mock engaged in a brief, tense exchange.
Suddenly, Mock produced a handgun and opened fire into the vehicle, striking Washington multiple times as he sat in the front passenger seat. In the chaotic aftermath, the driver sped away from the scene in a desperate search for a hospital. Their flight ended in the parking lot of a CVS pharmacy near 39th Street and Main, where they spotted a Kansas City Police Department patrol van and flagged down officers for help. Despite their efforts, Washington was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation swiftly identified Ivan D. Mock as the primary suspect. Witnesses from the vehicle identified him as the shooter. Approximately two weeks after a warrant was issued for his arrest, Mock was taken into custody. He was subsequently charged with second-degree murder, unlawful use of a weapon, and two counts of armed criminal action.
In January 2024, Ivan D. Mock stood trial for the murder of Daniel Washington. A Jackson County jury found him guilty of second-degree murder and one count of armed criminal action. In the months that followed, a judge sentenced Mock to a total of 40 years in prison—30 years for the murder and a consecutive 10-year sentence for the armed criminal action charge, bringing a measure of justice to the family of Daniel Washington.
