His purpose that evening was not to join the front lines of the demonstration but to ensure the safety of one of his sons, who had attended the protest. Francois arrived to pick him up, positioning himself near Warwick Boulevard and East 46th Street, a few blocks away from the main gathering of demonstrators.
While waiting in the vicinity of the protest, Francois was targeted in an apparent robbery. According to witnesses at the scene, the encounter turned violent, and Francois was shot. Bystanders who heard the gunfire rushed to his aid, finding him wounded on the ground. One witness removed their shirt to press against his injuries, while another held his hand and prayed, noting the wedding band on his finger.
