A passerby spotted the teenager and alerted the authorities around 9:30 a.m. at the Dayspring Pentecostal Church. When first responders arrived, they found that Tytus had an apparent gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene. He was a Black male. For days, his identity remained a mystery to investigators.
Police released a description of the young man, noting he had braces with black rubber bands and distinctive scars. They also described the bone-colored Adidas Yeezy 700 MNVN shoes he was wearing, hoping someone would recognize him.
The public's assistance proved crucial, and on Thursday of that week, police were able to identify him as Tytus Bridgeford. His death marked the 72nd homicide in Kansas City that year. The investigation into his killing is ongoing, and police have been canvassing the area for witnesses and any available surveillance footage that might shed light on the events leading to his death. As of now, authorities have not publicly identified any suspects or made any arrests in the case. Detectives are urging anyone with information to come forward and have offered a substantial reward for tips that lead to an arrest.
Tytus, who was born on December 26, 2007, in Omaha, Nebraska, had recently completed his sophomore year at Northeast High School. Remembered for his love of superheroes like The Flash and Spider-Man, as well as for his enjoyment of Legos, art, camping, and his silly nature, Tytus was known as someone who loved to help others. Memorial services to celebrate his life were held on Saturday, July 13, 2024, at Midtown Baptist Temple in Kansas City. He is survived by his mother, sister, five brothers, and stepfather.
