In the early morning hours of April 3, 2023, tragedy struck at a fast-food establishment in Kansas City, Missouri, claiming the life of 29-year-old James Free’Mon Hill Jr., a Black male resident of the city. Officers from the Kansas City Police Department were dispatched around 12:20 a.m. to Texas Tom’s, a restaurant located near East 70th Street and Prospect Avenue, following reports of a shooting.
Upon their arrival at the scene, law enforcement discovered Hill unresponsive in the carryout section of the business, suffering from fatal gunshot wounds. Despite the immediate response of emergency medical services, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the homicide revealed that the violence had stemmed from a verbal altercation between Hill and at least one other individual inside the restaurant's carryout area. Aside from his work at Quest Diagnostics and Ford Motor Company, he was active in the local music scene as an artist and had launched his own brand. His death marked the 41st homicide in Kansas City for the year, prompting community members and loved ones to hold vigils in his honor.

The Kansas City Police Department’s Homicide Unit continued to seek leads, urging anyone who was present at the restaurant or who had information about the shooter to come forward.
