Noah Jason Bryant was a 22-year-old Black man from Leavenworth, Missouri, described by his family as a shining light who was “everything that is good.” A substitute teacher in the Leavenworth School District, Noah had a servant’s heart and a huge personality that made everyone feel important. He loved cars, singing, and writing music, and was a constant support for his parents and two younger siblings.
Despite living with Crohn’s disease for most of his life, he was a spontaneous and joyful person who his father called his best friend.
On the evening of May 14, 2024, Noah was being a gentleman, riding with his girlfriend as she worked a DoorDash shift in Kansas City. Around 10:20 p.m., as they drove near the intersection of Northwest Barry Road and North Boardwalk Avenue, a man in a Jeep began driving aggressively beside them. The driver then fired a shot into their car, striking Noah in the head. His girlfriend heard a loud pop and saw the window was broken before realizing what had happened. The shooter fled the scene. Noah was rushed to a hospital, where he was placed on life support but later succumbed to his injuries.
While Noah was in the hospital, his family learned that he had registered as an organ donor on his birthday just a few months prior. In a final act of generosity that was true to his character, his organ donation saved at least seven lives. On the day of the procedure, more than 300 people filled the hospital halls to honor him with a final goodbye walk.
Investigators quickly determined the shooting was a random act of road rage, as Noah had no interaction with or connection to his attacker. Using city and business surveillance videos, detectives were able to identify the suspect’s Jeep and license plate, which led them to 26-year-old Christian Crail. Authorities also linked Crail’s vehicle to a separate road rage shooting that had occurred in Olathe on April 27.
A manhunt for Crail ended on May 20, 2024, when law enforcement officers tracked him to Centerville, Iowa. As detectives moved in to arrest him, Crail took his own life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside his vehicle. He was pronounced dead at an Iowa hospital. Because the primary suspect is deceased, the case is considered resolved. His family expressed frustration that Noah’s alleged killer will not be prosecuted for the crime. The case was closed in May 2024.
