On an April evening in 2023, a dispute in a driveway in Raytown, a suburb of Kansas City, Missouri, escalated into a fatal encounter that ended the life of 24-year-old Nehemiah Newton. The events of April 20th unfolded after witnesses reported hearing an argument, followed by the sound of rapid gunfire. When police arrived at the residence in the 8600 block of Stark Avenue, they discovered Newton in the driveway, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
According to accounts from
witnesses, a struggle had taken place between Newton, an 18-year-old named Jay’shaun D. Jones, and another individual. The conflict reportedly centered around a gun inside a backpack. Witnesses stated that Newton managed to gain control of the firearm and was moving away when Jones allegedly produced another weapon and shot him. An autopsy would later reveal that Newton had been shot 13 times, with seven of the wounds located in his back.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Jay’shaun D. Jones was identified as the suspect. One witness was able to pick him out of a photo lineup. During a police interview, Jones allegedly admitted to shooting Newton as he was walking away, stating that he believed Newton might turn back towards him. Following the investigation, Jones was taken into custody and prosecutors charged him with second-degree murder, unlawful use of a weapon, and two counts of armed criminal action. As of April 2023, he was being held in the Jackson County jail on a $75,000 cash bond.
