On August 31, 2014, a gathering at a residence in the 8400 block of East 98th Terrace in Kansas City, Missouri, turned tragic when 18-year-old male Jamond Dillard was fatally shot. The incident occurred inside the home where Dillard and others were present. Police responded to the scene and found the teenager suffering from a gunshot wound to the head, marking a sudden and violent end to the day's events.
Investigators determined that the shooting was not an intentional act of malice but
the result of reckless mishandling of a firearm. Authorities identified 19-year-old Columbus Nelson as the suspect involved in the death. According to court documents filed by Jackson County prosecutors, Nelson was in possession of a gun and was attempting to clear it or manipulate the slide. He reportedly told detectives that he was 'racking rounds' out of the weapon when it unexpectedly discharged as he tried to remove it from his hand or waistband.
Following the investigation, prosecutors charged Nelson with involuntary manslaughter, alleging that his reckless actions directly led to Dillard's death. The charge reflected the conclusion that while Nelson may not have intended to kill Dillard, his dangerous handling of a loaded firearm created the lethal risk that resulted in the loss of the 18-year-old's life.
