On the evening of October 23, 2023, violence erupted in the 4200 block of Benton Boulevard in Kansas City, Missouri, claiming the life of 26-year-old male Jo DeMont Crawford. Police officers were initially dispatched to the residential area around 8:30 p.m. following reports of gunshots. While en route, emergency dispatchers received additional calls confirming the sound of gunfire.
Upon arrival at the scene, law enforcement located evidence of a shooting but did not immediately find a victim at that specific location.
Minutes after the initial response, authorities were notified that a shooting victim had arrived by private vehicle at University Health. The wounded individual, identified as Crawford, had sustained critical injuries during the incident on Benton Boulevard. Despite receiving medical attention, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the hospital. Crawford, a graduate of Central High School who worked as a bus driver and tax preparer, was remembered by friends and family by nicknames such as 'Bubbles' and 'Marty.'
As of the last available reports following the incident, detectives had not announced any arrests or identified public suspects in connection with the homicide. The investigation remained ongoing as police sought information from the public to determine the circumstances leading up to the gunfire and to identify those responsible for the fatal shooting.
