On a quiet Sunday afternoon, November 27, 2022, the promising life of DeVohn Dudley-Reese, a 16-year-old Black male, was tragically cut short in Kansas City, Missouri. Known affectionately as 'Monster' during his youth football days due to his prowess on the field, DeVohn was a sophomore quarterback at William Chrisman High School with aspirations of playing at the collegiate level.
On that particular day, he had spent the morning relaxing at his mother's home, eating breakfast with his younger brothers before heading out in the early afternoon. He would never return, becoming one of many victims in a violent year for the city.
The events leading to his death unfolded near East 38th Street and Garfield Avenue around 2:30 p.m. According to court records and surveillance footage obtained by investigators, DeVohn was in the company of 18-year-old Jazion Sanders and a 17-year-old associate. The group had reportedly gone to the location under the pretense of selling tires to a fourth individual. Surveillance video captured the meeting of the four individuals at the intersection. During the interaction, Sanders reportedly produced a firearm, prompting a struggle to ensue among the group.
In the chaos that followed, investigators detailed a confusing and deadly sequence of actions. Court documents indicate that DeVohn grabbed at the 17-year-old who was with him. In response, the 17-year-old drew a gun and fired, striking DeVohn, who then collapsed. Simultaneously, the unknown fourth individual involved in the transaction produced a weapon and shot Sanders. When police officers arrived at the scene shortly after the gunfire erupted, they found both DeVohn and Sanders unresponsive; they were declared dead at the scene.
Law enforcement officers located the 17-year-old, who had also sustained injuries during the incident, and took him into custody as a person of interest later that evening. However, he was released shortly after while detectives continued to compile evidence for prosecutors. As of December 2022, no juvenile charges had been filed in connection with the shooting, and the fourth individual involved in the encounter had not been publicly identified or charged. DeVohn's family was left waiting for answers, fearing that the complex circumstances of the shooting might leave the case unsolved.
