On the evening of November 18, 2014, 20-year-old Kyle C. Longdon, a male resident of Kansas City, Kansas, met a violent end across the state line in Kansas City, Missouri. Known to his friends and family as 'C.J.,' Longdon had spent his formative years in the region, attending Bishop Ward High School and later Wyandotte High School. He was remembered for his love of the outdoors, particularly fishing and hunting, as well as a passion for football.
On that fatal Tuesday night, Longdon was sitting in a parked vehicle with a friend near the intersection of 12th Terrace and Highland Avenue, an area located within the urban core of the city.
The quiet evening turned chaotic around 10:00 p.m. when an unknown individual approached the vehicle. According to police reports, a man forced his way into the back seat of the car and brandished a firearm, pointing it directly at the head of Longdon's friend in the driver's seat. In a desperate attempt to protect his companion, Longdon reached for the weapon, engaging in a physical struggle with the intruder. During the altercation, the gunman fired, striking Longdon in the stomach. The assailant fled the scene immediately after the discharge of the weapon.
Despite his critical injuries, Longdon and his friend, who had sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the leg, managed to drive themselves to Truman Medical Center seeking urgent medical attention. Medical personnel attempted to save Longdon, but the severity of the abdominal wound proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead at the hospital. His friend survived the encounter. The sudden loss devastated Longdon's family, who recalled the horror of searching for him when he failed to show up for work the following day, only to receive the tragic news from detectives.
In the years following the homicide, the investigation into Longdon's death went cold. Detectives processed evidence and issued public pleas for information, believing the case was close to being solved at various points, yet no arrests were made. Police descriptions of the suspect were limited, identifying the individual only as a black male. Authorities repeatedly urged anyone with knowledge of the incident to come forward anonymously, hoping that a witness could provide the missing piece needed to bring charges against the person responsible for cutting the young man's life short.
