On a cold January evening, just a day after his 50th birthday, Dennis A. Sharkey Jr. was driving his white Chevrolet Spark south on Interstate 29 in Kansas City, Missouri. It was around 7 p.m. on January 10, 2025, and what began as a routine drive ended in a fatal encounter that would leave his loved ones searching for answers. That night, police responded to a report of a car that had veered off the road and discovered Sharkey's vehicle at the bottom of an embankment.
Inside, they found the 50-year-old man unresponsive, having sustained a gunshot wound. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead.
Sharkey, a dedicated sportswriter for the Platte County Citizen, was a familiar face in the local high school sports scene. He was remembered by friends and family as a kind man with a great sense of humor, and an avid fan of the Kansas City Chiefs. In the initial days of the investigation, authorities believed the shooting may have been the result of a road rage incident, though the exact motive remained unclear. His family and friends made public pleas for any witnesses to come forward with information that could help solve the senseless crime. The case was initially handled by the Kansas City Police Department before being transferred to the Platte County Sheriff's Office, as the shooting occurred outside of city limits.
For months, the investigation continued with few public developments. Then, in June 2025, a breakthrough was announced. Investigators, utilizing cellphone data and surveillance footage, were able to identify a suspect. Ruslan Huseynov, 34, was arrested and subsequently charged with second-degree murder, unlawful use of a weapon, and two counts of armed criminal action. According to court documents, a witness reported seeing a man in a dark-colored car get out of his vehicle and point a gun at Sharkey's car before hearing a gunshot. A search of Huseynov's home uncovered a 9mm pistol that ballistic testing later matched to the shell casing found at the scene and the bullet recovered from Sharkey's body. Huseynov pleaded not guilty to the charges and was being held without bond. The motive for the shooting remains officially undetermined, though the possibility of a road rage incident is still considered.
