On May 21, 2023, 33-year-old Black male Clarence Henderson was fatally shot outside a nightclub in Kansas City, Missouri. The incident occurred in the early morning hours at the Klymax Lounge located on Indiana Avenue. Henderson, a local rapper who performed under the name 'Nutty Still Gassin,' had been at the venue to perform earlier that night. As he exited the club around 1:25 a.m., gunfire erupted in what authorities described as a targeted attack.
The shooting resulted in a chaotic
scene that left three people dead and two others critically injured. Alongside Henderson, the victims included Jason McConnell, a 41-year-old security guard and father who was working at the door, and 24-year-old Antoinette Brenson, a mother of three who was a bystander. Police arriving at the scene found one victim on the sidewalk and another inside the lounge, while Henderson succumbed to his injuries. Investigators determined that Henderson was the intended target of the ambush and that the other victims were caught in the crossfire.
Law enforcement officials utilized surveillance footage and cellphone data to piece together the events leading up to the massacre. The investigation revealed that a suspect had been lying in wait outside the club for approximately 25 minutes before Henderson emerged. Authorities alleged that the shooter had a specific plan to confront Henderson, citing text messages and the calculated nature of the wait. The day following the shooting, officers on patrol spotted a vehicle matching the description of the shooter's car near 35th Street and Prospect Avenue.
Police arrested the driver, identified as 36-year-old Isiah D. Clinton, initially for driving with a suspended license. Following further investigation, prosecutors charged Clinton in July 2023 with three counts of first-degree murder, two counts of first-degree assault, and five counts of armed criminal action. Prosecutors stated that Clinton, who was on parole for a federal weapons violation at the time of the shooting, was the primary aggressor who set the plan in motion. While Clinton was taken into custody and held without bond, authorities indicated the investigation remained active as they sought other individuals believed to be involved in the attack.
