On the evening of June 22, 2014, a violent confrontation unfolded in Kansas City, Missouri, that claimed the life of 21-year-old Brandon Dean. Dean, a Black male, was walking near the intersection of 40th Street and Indiana Avenue when he encountered an individual with whom he had a previous dispute. What began as a verbal argument quickly escalated when the other individual produced a firearm.
In an attempt to defend himself, Dean tackled the gunman, and a struggle ensued between the two on the street.
During the physical altercation, a second armed individual approached the scene. Seeing the new threat, Dean attempted to flee the area for his safety. As he ran, shots were fired, striking him. Wounded, he managed to make his way into a nearby business located at the corner of 39th Street and Indiana Avenue, where he collapsed on the floor. Emergency responders arrived and transported him to a local hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
Following a homicide investigation, authorities identified two teenagers as suspects in the killing. In October 2014, prosecutors charged 17-year-old Eric D. Little Jr. with second-degree murder and armed criminal action, alleging he was the primary aggressor Dean had struggled with. A second 17-year-old, Rashad L. Williams, was identified as the other gunman present during the altercation and was charged with unlawful use of a weapon. Witness statements played a crucial role in piecing together the events, with one observer describing how the argument turned physical before the fatal shots were fired.
